The phenomenal growth of publishing in the last few decades, the coming up of more and more new publishing houses catering to specialized areas and the increasing global visibility of Indian writings have combined to create a need to produce and market books more professionally, offering a wide array of lucrative employment opportunities. Today there is a clear need for trained professionals in different areas of publishing including editing, production, design, sales and marketing. In order to meet this demand, National Book Trust, India (NBT) has been organizing courses in publishing throughout the country.

In pursuance of this aim, NBT organized a Training Course in Book Publishing at Ahmedabad from January 23-31, 2019 in collaboration with the Ahmedabad University of Kashmir. The programme was inaugurated by Honorable Governor of Gujarat. Chairman NBT Prof Baldeo Bhai was also present on the inauguration to address the participants. There was a tremendous response to the training program. The faculty was drawn from Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The participants were given lectures on various aspects of publishing and topics like editing. The University vice chancellor and the honorable Governor welcomed this effort of NBT to provide opportunity to the locals to get training in this field. The participants included qualified librarians, MBAs and PhDs.

Training course in book publishing aimed to give the participants an overview of publishing. Hands-on experience and interactive sessions were an important segment of the course. Effective and participatory interaction was ensured through case studies and group discussions. The participants were taken to Navjivan Trust Press for giving them a firsthand view of printing process. The course was designed specially keeping in view the needs of the local industry. Besides strengthening the knowledge in different aspects of publishing, the course would also help the participants to take up publishing as a career.
