BolognaBookPlus 2024: India ‘in the limelight’

With National Book Trust, India, BolognaBookPlus is delighted to announce that India’s significant and vibrant market will be ‘In the Limelight’ April 8-11 this year. Following Greece in 2023, this programme honours the industry and output of a chosen market each year. Under the aegis of the National Book Trust, publishers from India will congregate in Bologna to network and trade across the general publishing arena.

Ukraine Talks Pictures

Illustration and design from Ukraine are on display through the exhibit and award programme, ‘Talking Pictures’, coordinated and presented by the Hamelin Association and Steven Guarnaccia on behalf of BolognaBookPlus. It is a comprehensive initiative that investigates and honours excellence and innovation in the international production of visual books, exploring all aspects of visual imagery. The exhibit and award will consider books produced from 2021 to 2024 in this region. ‘Talking Pictures’ is complemented by two key seminars: ‘Talking Pictures: Ukraine’s Historic and Contemporary Visual Book Production’ and ‘Talking Pictures: Book Design in Ukraine’.

Taiwan in Translation Forum

As the Translation Forum returns for the third year, Taiwan takes centrestage with Catrina Liu, Books from Taiwan; Shin Su, Managing Director, BK Agency, and Kim Pai, Project Manager, Paisha Agency. Taiwan is home to a wealth of literature waiting to be discovered. Covering a range of genres from fiction to manga to children’s books, Taiwanese agents and publishers are the gateway to undiscovered and yet to be translated books. With a generous translation grant available for rights buying publishers, this session will highlight how to engage with Taiwan and where to look for its hidden gems.

Neil Packer announced as Author Ambassador

Award-winning illustrator and author, Neil Packer is the BolognaBookPlus Author Ambassador 2024, whose new book, La Parabola del Panificio Indipendente, is published by Camelozampa in April. A winner of the prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award in 2021, Neil has, among a long and prize-winning career, illustrated many titles for London’s Folio Society, including Heller’s Catch 22, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ One Hundred Years of Solitude and Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose.

Neil famously worked with Jim Kay to produce illustrations for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Illustrated Edition. Last year Neil illustrated Shakespeare’s The Complete Plays for the new Folio limited edition, published to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the First Folio. Neil is also announced as a judge for the Talking Pictures Award 2024.

With publishers from 50 countries and an enhanced pavilion from partner, AIE (Italian Publishers Association), to include this year a theatre, BolognaBookPlus also promises a topical programme of seminars and training events across both theatres including former favourites. These include: How to Sell Rights and Understand Licensing in Children’s Books; Call Your Agent: How to Become a Successful Literary Agent; Self- Publishing in Italy and Abroad; AI; the Italian Market; Direct to Consumer, and the new Audio Forum.
