New avenues in publishing!

As we draw close to the end of this year, we thought of how the publishing ecosystem has evolved over the years. As P M Sukumar puts it, “The market is estimated to be growing at over 19% annually. India has a fifth of the world’s 15-19 year olds with a school enrolment ratio of almost 100% at primary, about 92% at upper primary, 80% at secondary and 54% at higher secondary school levels! All these are indicative of continued growth in not only educational and higher education/academic publishing in India but also trade publishing from increasing number of readers from increased literacy & general interest levels.”

In this backdrop, as part of its various activities to promote books and reading, National Book Trust India has launched the 81days’ long Ganga Pustak Parikrama, covering a journey of 2500 kilometres, passing through 20 major cities, towns and settlements along river Ganga. According to Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT-India, “Over a period of three months, we have reached out to more than a thousand schools and connected with about 1.5lakh children and young adults among others, and about 3 lakh people in general.”

The beginning of the year 2023 will witness Chennai hosting the first Chennai International Book Fair (CIBF), from January 16-18, 2013. “This three-day B2B event will include an international pavilion, a publishing conference, Rights Hub and author meetings. There will be another speciality: we will have two guests of honour for our fair: one country and one state,” shares Senthil Nathan, International Partnership Consultant.

Next in line is leading publishing conclave, Jaipur BookMark, returning to the pink city for its ninth edition from January 19–23, 2023, running parallel to the iconic Jaipur Literature Festival. Manisha Chaudhry, Advisor, Jaipur Bookmark, shares, “The JBM 2023 spotlights a roundtable on translation and the children’s publishing roundtable.”

Another event to look forward to is New Delhi World Book Fair (February 25- March 3, 2023), celebrating its 50 years’ journey and France as the Guest of Honour Country.

While, BolognaBookPlus is scheduled from March 6-9, 2023. “BBPlus would offer a one-stop-shop to trade rights for general as well as children’s, early in the publishing book fair calendar, in mainland Europe,” shares Jacks Thomas, Guest Director, BolognaBookPlus.

This issue is packed with all these features and more. Happy reading!
