Embracing the world of digital publishing!
Sahil Gupta, Director, V&S Publishers, shares his views on digital publishing in India.
India’s rich cultural heritage and diverse history testify that India has always been the world’s knowledge hub. Right from the days of Nalanda & writings on Tamra Patras to the earliest versions of newspapers and research material coupled with the advent of innumerable books across genres, the first of which was published in India in 1561, the publishers have been the torchbearers for knowledge dissemination. As custodians of our heritage and ancient knowledge, we have illuminated young minds over centuries transcending boundaries of religion, caste & geography.
Over the centuries, the Indian Publishing Industry has been a driving force in shaping the socio-economic landscape of our nation. By promoting learning and nurturing generations through academic publications and diverse books across subjects and genres, the industry has catered to the needs of millions of people, leaving an indelible mark on our society and economy.
The digital revolution…
‘The INR 800 billion Indian Publishing Industry’, which includes more than 24000 publishers, employing nearly a million people, has the potential to leave an imprint on every future generation, today, stands at the cusp of a Digital Revolution. As the lines between Digital and Physical blur, we must understand that every revolution provides a window to the future. In the transition from the ‘90s to the beginning of the 2000s, at the cusp of globalisation coupled with various reforms on the economic front, publishers welcomed computer technology with open arms and delivered content at par with international standards, leading to an exponential rise in exports which paved paths for future CEOs of multibillion companies worldwide that we see today.
The adoption of e-commerce platforms and learning technologies for better access to books and sharing knowledge over the last decade, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, further outlines the profound transformation in the publishing sector and how it is increasingly becoming the cornerstone in making India a ‘Knowledge Economy’.
The time is ripe for the formidable Indian Publishing Industry to harness the numerous opportunities that the world of Digital Transformation presents and chart new courses in shaping our country’s intellectual and cultural landscape.
The opportunities…
The limitless realm of infinite possibilities for monetising content in the digital arena coupled with the code to transform knowledge into actionable data and revenue strategies needs to be unlocked. Leveraging digital technologies, adopting innovative business models, enhancing reader engagement, and making data-driven decisions seems to be the future of publishing. The data-driven digital approach that allows for more targeted marketing, better content creation, and improved business strategies aligned with the audience’s personalised interests, would effectively mean publishers offering hybrid content to end users – a combination of physical component, say a book, alongside e-component which could range from the very basic digital subscription to something as wide as augmented reality or Audio video tutorial etc.
With the proliferation of e-books, digital subscriptions, open access resources, creative content delivery platforms, and integration of AI, the relevance of copyright and IPR protection in the publishing ecosystem needs to be further reinstated and perhaps reimagined. Publishers need to leverage the opportunities that come their way and collaborate with right industry partners to ensure they stay relevant.
Road ahead…
The Indian Publishing Industry continues to be a key component and perhaps a fulcrum to Nations Development contributing not only to literacy, education & job sector but also enhancing our global presence and reputation by repositioning India as the Publishing Hub for the world. Our industry’s offering to major International players in printing and publishing space remains unparalleled owing to superior quality at cost effective rates that we are able to offer.
Third largest in the world and second largest in English language books: the Indian publishing industry is determined to forge ahead, embracing the responsibility bestowed upon it. We however must unite as a community exploring collaborative opportunities like co-publishing and rights exchange and focus on embracing the digital world of publishing, balancing creativity and innovation instead of shying away from upcoming models centred around AI and technology.
I envision the publishing industry in India as a vast knowledge tree with ever-expanding branches spreading far and wide across various genres and fields. Whether in newspapers, journals, magazines, letters, articles, books, e-books, blogs, comments or even microblogs, the root remains in publishing.
While at one end, we have ancient wisdom imparted to us by our forefathers, on the other hand, we have a new revolution knocking on our doors: Artificial Intelligence. It would not be incorrect to state that publishing can bridge the past and future between ancient wisdom and technological intelligence. Hence, publishers would empower India as a world leader who encompass a unique sense of understanding and technological capability, at whose heart lay the content, books and knowledge.
As publishers embrace the world of digital publishing and create a legacy of innovation, inclusivity and sustainable growth without letting go of their cultural ethos, the Indian publishing industry would continue to remain one of the key contributors to the country’s GDP and in making India a Knowledge Economy.
