BolognaBookPlus blossoms: A growing hub for general publishing
BolognaBookPlus thrives with its expanding exhibitor, visitor and partner ecosystem. The show is increasingly seeing participation from the Indian publishers.
When BolognaBookPlus launched in 2021, it was a modest but ambitious seed planted in the rich soil of the publishing world. Born from the internationally celebrated Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the new initiative aimed to create a space for general publishing professionals to connect, share knowledge, and do business – a natural extension of its parent, but with its own ambitions. Fast-forward to April 2025, and the growth of that small acorn is impossible to ignore.
Important event for adult publishing…
Since its inception, BolognaBookPlus has grown in both scope and stature. Initially perceived as a satellite to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, it has since carved out its own distinct identity.
While it remains intrinsically linked to its “mothership,” it is established as a key Spring event for general publishing in the international trade calendar. Adult trade publishing, illustration and design, plus specialist sectors all have found a welcome home at BolognaBookPlus, contributing to its eclectic and inclusive atmosphere. India, in particular, has been at the heart of the BolognaBookPlus programme with engaged exhibitors, speakers and events all showcasing the breadth of what this important market has to offer the international publishing stage.
One of the event’s most celebrated aspects is its thought-provoking seminar and content programme. Carefully curated and expertly delivered, the sessions have become known for their depth, diversity, and relevance.
Topics range from the future of AI in publishing to international market access, translation trends, sustainability, and the ever-evolving role of publishers in the global cultural conversation. The speakers include senior executives, bestselling authors, and trailblazing entrepreneurs regularly taking the stage to share their insights.
BolognaBookPlus 2025 highlights…
The most recent edition of BolognaBookPlus in April 2025 was its most successful to date. With impressive attendance, an expanded exhibition footprint, and a seminar programme that attracted top-tier global speakers, the event has clearly struck a chord with the international publishing community.
The energy was palpable throughout the four-day gathering, as professionals from every corner of the industry – rights agents, publishers, editors, booksellers, and marketers – engaged in a dynamic exchange of ideas, deals, and innovation. Celebrating Author Ambassador Tom Benjamin, Illustration Ambassador Joanna Karpowicz & Alumni Awardwinning illustrator Neil Packer, the preview of The Art of Folio exhibition was unveiled by Anna and had speakers giving insigths into the rich world of AI discovery. The second edition of the Audio Forum in partnership with Beat Technology had key players in the audio book space and a very eager audience who wanted to know about the current trends. While, The Translation Forum emphasised Estonia, Norway & Poland, audience learnt about translation trends in these markets.
The AI Summit was standing-room only, the Rights Centre was abuzz with meetings, and events on Audio, Illustration, Translation and rights were consistently over-subscribed. This kind of engagement signals not just growth, but real resonance with the needs of the modern publishing professional.
Next edition…already in process…
Looking ahead, the 2026 edition, scheduled for 13–16 April, promises to build on this success. Organisers are already deep in planning to expand the exhibition space, introduce new programming strands, and enhance networking opportunities.
BolognaBookPlus has already started forging new relationships on behalf of its community in different areas of the world. The immediate first stop is Beijing International Book Fair in mid-June followed by the ALA in Philadelphia.
With growing international participation and a reputation for quality, BolognaBookPlus is firmly on the map as a must-attend fixture in the global publishing calendar.
As with any great oak, its strength lies not just in size, but in the roots – a passionate community, a forwardthinking ethos, and a commitment to excellence. From small acorns indeed, an increasingly respected industry event has been established.
