Bangalore: History, Myths, and Memories Revisited

Renowned actor, director, playwright, Girish Karnad released Bangalore: Roots and Beyond, a coffee table book published by Niyogi Books at a simple but elegant function held at Oxford Book Store in Bengaluru. Well-known novelist, Shashi Deshpande attended the event as guest of honour.

Girish Karnad complimented the author for her painstaking research and rare photographs in the book. “Maya has left no stone unturned to revisit history, myths, and memories”, he said. While, Shashi Deshpande recounted her experiences in the ‘magical city’.

The author, Maya Jayapal, while introducing the book said that the city has been known by many names like the Garden-city, Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore, Bengaluru and added that from a simple mud fort built by Kempe Gowda, Bengaluru has grown to become a bustling cosmopolitan hub.

The book, presents the city in all its grandeur. As one turns the pages, one is awed by the palaces, the beauty of its parks, the vivid hues of its markets and much more. Quaint history blends with insightful observations as the author explores the city’s monuments, those that have survived the test of time, and introduces us to its people, the diverse communities that breathe life into the city. It is not merely a nostalgic account of times past but also about what lies ahead.
