The education sector in India is recognised today as the “sunrise sector” because of the accelerated growth and investment that it has been attracting both from the government and the private pool. In publishing, this would mean an increased demand of textbooks and educational material for supplementary reading.

According to a recent report, the largest demand is resulting from the English medium private schools. The estimated projections for English medium textbook, market are almost to the tune of INR 7,000 crore. This demand is also

being fuelled by the transition from rote learning to concept based learning, whereby the educational institutions and parents are adapting newer formats and digitised education material to facilitate delivery of concepts. Another feature is the unsaturated demand for international content in reference books and aided learning.

German educational book market boasts of an extremely sophisticated and efficient publishing infrastructure. In an effort to link Indian and German book industries in the education segment, the German Book Office New Delhi is organising its annual Editors Trip to Germany with the theme “Education” from September 2-6, 2013.

The fully organised trip includes meetings across Germany with important publishing houses, publishers, rights managers, editors and authors, thereby providing invaluable insights into the German market while also allowing for the exchange of ideas, new concepts and rights negotiations for the participants. Six Indian participants this year will have the opportunity to network with German publishing professionals and discuss trends in Germany’s educational book-publishing market. Topics of exchange will range from negotiating book royalties to securing funds for translations. The objective of the trip is not only to provide exposure to the participants to the German book market but also for them to learn new ways of publishing and build a long term business relationship.
