Drawing attention towards the history and growth of the company, Rajan Jain, Managing Director, Scientific International Pvt Ltd, said, “My father Vinod Kr Jain and his three brothers SK Jain (Mataji) and others started the company in 1972. He humbly started his career from Nai Sarak, the biggest market for college textbooks under the name of College Book Store. In 1982, they started their own publication under the brand name CBS which later shifted to Daryaganj in 1989 to become an individual business firm under the name of CBS Publishers & Distributors that wholly focused on Medical and Technical publications.”

Career in publishing…

Rajan JainSpeaking about his career, Rajan said, “I started my career very early in 1997 while still in college in Switzerland but when I joined my family business in 1999, I had to start from the grassroots. My father would treat me like a normal sales person without any additional facilities. I struggled really hard, from the scratch to bring my business to the International markets”. He further said, “My first tour was to Bangalore, then to Nepal and then different parts of South and West. In the year 2000, I started travelling abroad and explored my own publication in South-East Asian markets of SAARC countries. I attribute my struggle to be the reason of my success which helped me raise my company from National to International level.”

Rajan said, “When I separated from CBS in 2011, I started my journey with Scientific International and Publication, with the name of MedTech in 2012 as I had good experience in Medical and Technical books.” He started his journey in publication with the book by the name “Medical Dictionary”. His main interests were Life Science, Agriculture and Technical books.

“During those days, medical books were only available from the UK and US and were very expensive. We not only tried to bring the same quality books but also at much lower rates,” recalls Rajan. He further stated, “We have excellent Indian authors who help us bring high-quality books for the students at affordable prices. They create content according to the Indian syllabus with much easier language.”

Journey so far…

“When I started my own company, it was a big challenge as after 2011, the market for books went down. People were skeptical that eBooks will take over. I focused more on libraries as we were very strong on Scientific and Technical books. The funding for such libraries were decreasing too but we sailed through as we brought books of both foreign and Indian authors. We also looked for new topics which nobody else was doing,” he shared.

The expanse…

“Since we have four offices all over India and over 5000 distributors, my aim is that our books are prescribed in all Engineering, Medical and Life Science colleges.” said Rajan.

New initiatives…

“There are so many new ideas to explore. Right now I am investing into marketing apps and thinking how we can expand our textbook business and what more online solutions we can offer to our customers. We are tying up with some US companies for this service to cater the wide range of international market,” told Rajan.

“In one year, we hope to be the biggest publisher for Life Science in India. We have also developed a range of titles in life sciences with the name of Medtech, an imprint of Scientific International, with many renowned international authors from India and Overseas.

We are introducing these titles to international markets at very competitive price so that readers around the world can get best knowledge at good price. We are also involved with conferences and seminars in Eastern Europe, US and UK for our authors”, revealed Rajan.

Talking more about the future plans, he further stated, “We will be bringing out 150 titles this year and plan to add at least 100 titles every year. We have Organic Evolution, Biostatistics, Molecular Biology by Veer Bala Rastogi and many more titles like Zubey’s Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which we hope to be amongst the bestsellers.”

The company’s growth and visibility is very much visible in National and International markets. About the company’s manpower, Rajan said, “We are gradually growing. We started with three people in the production department and today we have 40 people in the same.”

Besides this, Rajan is also planning to start courses in Vocational and Skill Development and also hopes to start a University for Engineering and Management.
