The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. In 2016 the fair will take place from April 12-14, 2016 at Olympia, West London, and cover all aspects of the publishing industry.

31st International Publishers Congress

The 31st International Publishers Congress has announced that Arnaud Nourry and Alaa Al Aswany will be key note speakers at the 31st Congress in London in April 2016.The Congress, which runs from April 9-12, 2016, will take place in London for the second time. It is organised by the International Publishers Association in partnership with the UK Publishers Association and The London Book Fair. The conference promises debate, analysis and networking at the most senior level across a comprehensive programme curated to address the key policy and practical issues of the day.

The programme, strategically timed to coincide with The London Book Fair, ensures that delegates will have an enriched experience not only of the Congress but also a curated agenda throughout the book fair itself.

Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is the official Gold Sponsor for the 31st International Publishers Congress. Arnaud Nourry and Alaa Al Aswany will speak on Sunday April 10, part of a day focussing on discussing the business of global publishing. This will be followed by a Gala dinner on Sunday night in the heart of London’s historic palace district.

Monday’s Congress programme will look at the wider issues around publishing progress and opportunities in a consumerled world. Delegates will be given the option for their third day to attend the Research & Scholarly Publishing Forum, What Works Education Conference or a more general seminar programme within the book fair itself.

Monday conference – Quantum relaunched

London Book Fair has refreshed its Monday conference, Quantum: Publishing & So Much More, which will deliver a datadriven overview of the global publishing industry and its place in the wider content industries in association with the UK Publishers Association.

Quantum: Publishing & So Much More will succeed Publishing for Digital Minds as the conference that launches The London Book Fair, taking place on Monday 11 April at Olympia Conference Centre, London. The name was selected in recognition of how recent developments at the leading edge of science and technology have taken us to a new stage of development: the Quantum Age.

Quantum will offer delegates an unmissable blend of new insight, research and networking in a new context where digital and physical coexist harmoniously.

Quantum agrees research collaboration with Nielsen

To deliver the level of insight and industry data that publishing conference delegates increasingly value, The London Book Fair has also agreed a collaboration with Nielsen that will see it present research on the global publishing industry at Quantum. Nielsen’s research activities across the media will add further value to delegates, providing data to support the content of individual conference sessions. New media pioneer Bill Thompson and digital publishing strategist Alison Jones will chair Quantum – bringing together their formidable experience and insight to the programme line-up.

Orna O’Brien, conference manager for The London Book Fair, said, “Publishing is at the heart of a multimedia world where international boundaries are increasingly blurred. With Quantum, visitors to London Book Fair 2016 will get the opportunity to look at what’s happening inside the content industries worldwide. And with Nielsen on board we can be assured of presenting a conference where data underpins every insight.”

Best Chinese Children’s Publishing

The London Book Fair (LBF) is calling for children’s publishers across China to showcase their success to an audience of international publishers by entering their work for The London Book Fair International Excellence Awards 2016.

Last year China Publishers Group’s international success was recognised at The LBF International Excellence Awards, held in London in April each year, to celebrate the global publishing industry’s most successful and inspirational initiatives at the world’s largest spring rights fair. LBF is extending a formal invitation to Chinese children’s publishers to enter the ‘Trade Children’s and Young Adult Publisher Award’ at next year’s awards, as part of its commitment to ensuring publishers from the world’s fastest growing economy are well represented at the Awards.

Jacks Thomas, director, The London Book Fair said, “The children’s publishing industry in China is vibrant, innovative and imaginative as befits a country which is at the forefront of embracing advances in the creative sector. Inspiring the readers of tomorrow is a goal that unites those in the book business around the globe. I cannot wait to see Chinese children’s publishers’ work showcased at the LBF International Awards following in the footsteps of the success of China Publishing Group who won the acclaimed Chairman’s Award this year.”

LBF’s call for entries from Chinese children’s publishers is the latest example of cross-cultural exchange between China and the UK enabled by the fair. Building on the legacy of China Market Focus in 2012, LBF has played host to growing delegations of Chinese publishers in succeeding years, culminating in China Publishing Group winning the coveted Chairman’s Award at the LBF International Excellence Awards in 2015. LBF continues to support new partnerships between UK and Chinese publishers outside of the fair, most recently at China Shanghai International Book Fair, where LBF led a delegation of leading British children’s publishers in November 2015.

The Author Club and Write Now!

The London Book Fair (LBF) is continuing to expand its programme for authors, with the launch of two new initiatives for 2016 – the Author Club, which will provide a range of LBF benefits and networking opportunities throughout the year, and Write Now!, a residential weekend of informative talks and workshops focusing on Women’s Fiction, curated in partnership with HarperCollins’ digital-first imprint, Carina UK. Created with LBF’s ever-growing author audience in mind, Write Now! will take place at Bailbrook House Hotel, Bath over the weekend of January 23-24, 2016. Aimed at aspiring, new and hybrid authors, it will provide practical advice to guide attendees through the never-ending choices now available to them when it comes to how they publish and market their books.

The weekend will wrap up with a special edition of LBF’s popular The Write Stuff competition that takes places every year at LBF. A Dragon’s Den style event, Write Now! attendees will have the opportunity to enter a competition to pitch their books on the day to agent Caroline Sheldon, as well as Victoria Oundjian and Sam Missingham from the HarperCollins team, in front of the Write Now! audience. The Write Stuff winner will win a revision letter from Victoria Oundjian to review their work in more depth.

Write Now! delegates will also attend a networking drinks reception and official dinner, which will include an after-dinner talk by Carina UK’s bestselling writer Annie Lyons, author of Not Quite Perfect, Dear Lizzie and, most recently, Life or Something Like It. The evening will provide the perfect opportunity for attendees to meet up with other authors, as well as publishing and agenting professionals.

In addition to Write Now! LBF’s brand new Author Club will expand its author community that has to date focused on one of the most popular features at the Fair – Author HQ, the dedicated theatre for authors, originally launched as a response to increasing interest from the self-publishing community. All Write Now! attendees automatically become members. Authors registering for the Author Club will have access to everything on offer from LBF throughout the year, as well as access to year round amazing benefits.
