“Huge contribution of NBT-India in nation building”
says Padma Shri awardee and eminent historian Meenakshi Jain at the 68th Foundation Day of the NBT-India.
On the occasion of the 68th Foundation Day of the National Book Trust, India (NBT-India) on August 1, 2024, a lecture on the “The Idea of Books & Reading: A Historical Perspective” was organised in the conference hall of NBT Headquarters. Padma Shri awardee and an eminent historian Dr. Meenakshi Jain, who was the keynote speaker, congratulated all the officers and the staff of NBT. She highlighted that NBT-India has been at the forefront in developing reading culture in nation and books in vast genres, like science and tribal affairs. She encouraged NBT’s crucial role in making “Books for All,” thus contributing to nation building.
Dr. Meenakshi also mentioned India’s tradition of reading and learning integrating India’s civilization, culture, in its education systems and it has been adopted worldwide.
Guest of Honour and Member of the National Board of Trustees, Rajesh Pandey, recalled about the contributions of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and renowned writer Anna Bhau Sathe in raising societal awareness through literature, and other writings. He declared that NBT-India represents more than just an institution; it’s a movement which is spreading the culture and education system worldwide through power of books. NBT’s growth directly promotes the country’s culture and tradition.
Prof. Milind Sudhakar Marathe, Chairman of NBT- India who presided over the event, said that thought is a powerful vision for transforming individuals and society. He reiterated NBT’s mission to have “books for all” –a goal that NBT has pursued for 68 years. He also urged every NBT employee to strive to impact lives positively through books.
While, Yuvraj Malik, Director of the National Book Trust, elaborated on NBT’s achievements over the past year. He highlighted that NBT has established itself as an institution that provides quality and certified books nationwide. Over the last year, NBT has become a respected institution known for providing high-quality, certified books across the nation, with a strong emphasis on promoting multilingualism. By promoting multilingualism, NBT has delivered books in over 60 languages to approx. 10 million readers in the past year. Additionally, NBT has made progress in inclusivity by publishing Braille books and audiobooks under its “Books for All” initiative.
Continuing its mission of promoting Indian literature on a global platform, NBT spearheaded the INDIA National Stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair held in Germany from 18-22 October 2023. This initiative, in collaboration with CAPEXIL (Ministry of Commerce & Trade, Govt of India), aimed at enhancing the visibility of Indian books abroad.
During the event, NBT also honoured its staff with Foundation Day Excellence Awards, recognising their exceptional contributions. Furthermore, employees who have dedicated 25 years of service to the organisation were rewarded for their longstanding commitment, marking their significant role in the institution’s success.
