A sleuth tale…

Book: Aswathy and the Boot of God
Author: Sowmya Rajendran
Publisher: Puffin Books
(Pp 192, Rs 199)

Teenager Aswathy Venugopalan’s life is divided between Ammamma’s jackfruit backyard, monotonous school life, close pinky pals and Maths tuitions (often bunked) in a tiny town. But that does not deter this adventurous girl’s interest in sleuthing fuelled by mystery films. It’s a dream come true when God (residing in a tattered, old boot!) decides to put her investigation skills to test by giving her the case of a woman who is believed to have ended her life.

The modern and witty presentation of the book sets it apart. For instance, here is a God who is a modern, free-thinking woman: who takes a shot of toddy occasionally, goes on vacations, makes it point to stay connected through e-mail and WhatsApp and also goes on a date! A constant reminder of God from the Hollywood flick ‘Bruce Almighty’. She is the perfect mate for the Gen-Y with her cool attitude.

There begins the journey of Aswathy and God to bring an innocent victim to justice. While Aswathy and her gang of friends diligently investigate the case, author Rajendran does not forget about the complicated world around teenagers and their problems. The book serves as a perfect read wherein fantasy meets reality.
